Dhangadhi, Nov. 4: The local levels in Kailali district are working towards establishing COVID-19 special hospitals.
According to the decision taken by the central government to operate five-bed COVID-19 special hospital in each local level, the local governments have initiated works in that direction.
For the construction of hospital, Rs. 1 million will be allocated to each local level.
Birendra Sapkota, health coordinator of Kailari Gaunpalika, said that the construction works were initiated after the central government sent the provisioned fund. "We have also started the proceedings to appoint health workers for the same. The hospital will come into operation as soon as the health workers are appointed," he added.
The Kailari Gaunpalika is setting up the hospital in Sarbodaya Primary School which was being used as an isolation center before. "The budget allocated by the central government will be used to enhance the isolation centre as well as to add more beds," said coordinator Sapkota.
Of the Rs. 1 million to be provided to each local level, Rs. 450,000 is allotted for the salary of health workers, Rs. 50,000 for medicines and Rs. 500,000 for beds.
As the hospital can be constructed in the existing buildings in less budget, the local governments are utilising existing resources for the same. Bhajani Municipality has decided to establish the existing primary health centre as COVID-19 special hospital.
Hariram Chaudhary, chief administrative officer of the municipality, said that the municipality was preparing to operate the hospital by appointing health workers. "We have already appointed two staff nurses and one helper. The existing doctor of the primary health centre will be deployed for treatment of the patients," he said.
Chaudhary added that even though the central government had allocated budget to set up five beds in the hospital, the municipality had decided to set up 10 beds instead. "The local government will work in accordance with the circumstances the pandemic will give rise to in the days to come.
The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has said that a doctor, two nurses and a helper should be appointed in the hospital and that other staffers can be appointed by the local level itself if needed.
There are a total of 13 local levels in Kailali, of which two in the hilly area are in search of community building to establish the hospital. Ram Rokka Magar of Chure Gaunpalika said that they were planning to operate the special hospital in the community building for now. "We have already demanded for the appointment of health workers," he said.
Lal Bahadur Dhami, district health chief, said that all local levels had started working toward the operation of COVID-19 special hospital after the central government allocated the budget. He added that all the hospitals should be ready within three months.
