Kathmandu, Mar. 23: Minister for Communication and Information Technology Parbat Gurung has said the government would do its best until it remained in office even though its tenure was uncertain. The government is in transition now, but it aims to work for the betterment of citizens as long as it lasts, he said.
Speaking at a programme organised on the occasion of the 20th foundation day of the Association of Community Radio Broadcasters Nepal (ACORAB), Minister Gurung said the government was ready to solve the problems faced by the community radios.
He said that the government could move ahead by discussing the necessary policy arrangements from ministerial level, the Council of Ministers and even from the Parliament for the betterment of community radios.
In another context, Minister Gurung said that regulation was needed to control the distortions, anomalies and chaotic style as community radios were acting more like means of election propaganda for the parties and their leaders than working for the community.
He blamed that many community radios worked for individuals or parties rather than for social transformation and that had to be regulated by ACORAB.
On the occasion, Nepali Congress National Assembly Parliamentary Party Leader Radheshyam Adhikari praised the community radios for providing easy access to information even in the marginalised areas of the country. He also stressed on the need for the government to focus on solving the problems faced by the community radios.

Similarly, Ram Narayan Bidari, National Assembly member, said community radios should disseminate accurate information at the community level. He stressed on the role of community radios in informing the general public about the wrongdoings of the government or individuals, along with their good works.
Meanwhile, inaugurating an orientation programme with various language coordinators and co-cordinators of Naya Nepal page of Gorkhapatra daily, organised by the National Information Commission in the capital on Monday, Gurung has said that the information and messages of national importance should be published in various languages so that all the ethnic groups of the country can easily understand them.
Minister Gurung said that it was appreciable that the Gorkhapatra’s initiative to disseminate news in different languages had ensured the citizens’ rights to get information in their own language.
He pointed out the need to make the Naya Nepal page of Gorkhapatra more systematic and sophisticated not only for the sake of formality but also for the people of those languages to enjoy the right to information in their own language.
“We need to change the culture of not giving information to the community and taking advantage of it,” he said. “We are witnessing the use of the right to information only to protest against someone, to file a case against someone, not with the right intention, but with the wrong intention,” said Minister Gurung.
