Floods, landslides kill 10 in Achham, Bajura, Bajhang

Achham/Bajhang/Bajura, Aug. 20: At least 10 people were killed and dozen others went missing when floods and landslides hit different places of Achham, Bajhang and Bajura districts in Sudur Paschim and Karnali States on Tuesday night and Wednesday. Six persons were killed and 11 others went missing in a massive flood of the Kailash Khola in Saini Bazaar of Ramroshan Rural Municipality in Achham district on Tuesday midnight.
According to Our Achham Correspondent, of the 17 persons who went missing in the floods, bodies of six persons were recovered in the bank of the Kailash River, some 10 km away from their settlement. Seven of the missing persons are from a same family.
Identity of all the missing persons was ascertained Wednesday afternoon, however, the recovered bodies were yet to be identified. The flood washed away 22 houses, according to Police Post of Shantada.
The flood also swept away an ambulance and a jeep of the rural municipality, buffaloes, goats, oxen and birds. The flood caused a massive damage to Mujabagar, the centre of Ramroshan Gaupalika, Saini Bazaar, Khal Bazaar, Gajjad Bazaar and paddy fields located near the river.
Chief District Officer Gokarna Prasad Updhaya returned to the district headquarters after inspecting the flood-hit areas. Locals have suspected that the flood occurred as the river blocked above the village burst all of a sudden.
Meanwhile, two children were buried to death in a landslide at Bungal Municipality-5 of Bajhang district on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased have been identified as 12-year old Sachin Tamrakar and six-year old Sudip Okheda. The bodies of the children were recovered by a search team of Nepal Police, Nepali Army and locals.
In the disaster, the house of Pratap Tamrakar, who is currently in Banglore of India in search of job, was completely damaged. According to the police, four other members of Tamrakar family were injured in the incident.
The Area Police Office said they were undergoing treatment at a local health post in Khiratdi.
Likewise, a minor was buried in a rain-triggered landslide at Bandanda of Chhededaha Rural Municipality-5 in Bajura district on Tuesday night.
The deceased was three-year old Swaamika Budha of the same village, according to District Police Office, Bajura.
The minor was buried to death while she was sleeping inside her room when a massive chunk of earth came rolling down through the hilly terrain, information officer at District Police Office Lokendra Singh Thagunna said.
Thagunna said that 60-year old grandmother of the girl, Nanda Budha, and 5-year old elder sister Binita of the deceased were injured.
Two goats were also buried in the landslide, said police.
Similarly, 75-year old Jhinu Luwar of Budhinanda Municipality-6 of the district died when a flood swept her away on Tuesday night.
She was swept away by the flood in the Baddhigadh River while she was grinding wheat in a water-mill. Flood also washed away the water mill.
Meanwhile, around 3,000 houses in Triveni Municipality in Bajura have been facing power outage after the district's first powerhouse Malagadh was hit by a landslide causing damages to the canal of the hydropower.
A torrential rain-triggered landslide on Tuesday night damaged the canal of the hydropower.
