Kathmandu, July 22: Floods and landslides continued to wreak havoc across the country also on Tuesday, killing four persons in Bagmati State.
Three of a same family died when a landslide swept away a house in Aginchowk of Tripurasundari Gaunpalika-6, Dhading district on Tuesday.
According to police, the deceased were identified as Milan Khand, 27, his 22-year-old wife Samjhana Khand and their two-year-old son Amrit Khand.
Meanwhile, a septuagenarian man died in Hetauda after falling from a tuin. Krishna Prasad Parajuli,77, slipped from the tuin when he was heading his home in Maintar from Chaukitol in Hetauda Sub-Metropolitanc City-1.
Seriously injured Parajuli breathed his last on way to Bharatpur Hospital. In lack of a bridge, people of Mainatar, Laljhadi and other settlements in Hetauda-1 have to depend on risky tuin to cross the river. Meanwhile, water levels in almost all rivers from the Kankai in State 1 to the Narayani and Bagmati in Bagmati rose on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the blocked Prithvi Highway could not come into operation fully today. The concerned authority was blamed for the delay in opening the road for one-way traffic movement.
On Tuesday, the Facebook page of Narayangadh-Mugling road project had a notice that the road would be ready for the vehicular movement by 1 pm. The road was blocked after flood in Mawakhola swept away a portion of the bridge and landslides fell in about 50 places along the Narayangadh-Mugling road section on Monday. But when the loader reached the site to clear the road, it was found that the machine had no diesel.
It took four hours more to remove the obstruction due to which the road opened for one-way traffic only at around 5 pm.
According to traffic police, it took a long time to find diesel since it was not available in the petrol stations nearby.
“When we searched for a loader for the work, it didn’t have fuel. We searched for diesel at petrol stations in the Mugling and Aabu Khaireni areas but none had the fuel. We then collected fuel from the vehicles stranded along blocked road,” said Daya Krishna Bhatta of Chitwan Traffic Police.
Meanwhile, the continuous rainfall for three days has flooded various mid-Terai districts, including Sarlahi, Bara, Parsa and Rautahat.
Even the District Administration Office of Parsa submerged under three feet of water. The State 2’s only metropolitan city Birgunj also was inundated with water entering the buildings of the metropolitan office, Nepal Rastra Bank’s regional office and more than a dozen other banks and institutions.
The city lacks a proper drainage system to allow excess water to flow out. As a result, every year the people face a problem of flooding after heavy rains.
