Chitwan, Jan. 9: Five species of birds from Nepal are in critical condition, the ornithologists have found.
In the current mid-winter bird count, five species of birds were found to be in critical condition, said senior ornithologist and national coordinator for the count Dr. Hem Sagar Baral.
According to him, Golden-fronted Leafbird is the most endangered species.

This bird was sighted only a few years ago in the Koshi area, Chitwan National Park, Bardiya National Park, Shuklaphata Reservation and Rupandehi. But it is now only spotted in one place in Rupandehi, said Dr. Baral, adding that it has been a few years since the bird of this species stopped breeding here.

Similarly, two species of falcons are also in critical condition. According to Baral, the birds have not been sighted in Chitwan and other places during the latest census. According to ornithologist Baral, two species of birds, including Eurasian Curlew, have gone missing.
He suggested that the government create a conducive environment for the protection of these five species of birds and secure their habitats. He said that the birds have started to disappear due to the modernisation of the wetlands where the birds are found, such as the operation of motorboats and other anthropogenic activities in the water.

Birds are being counted from January 1 to 16. The census conducted in Chitwan on Wednesday. Former President of Bird Education Society Chitwan, Basu Bidari, said that no new birds were sighted in the census and the number of native birds had decreased.
Last year, only 53 water-dependent species of birds were found in Chitwan. There are 889 species of birds in Nepal, out of which there are more than two hundred species of waterfowl. Some 635 species of birds are found in Chitwan.
