Kathmandu, Mar. 22: This year’s Fagu, the festival of colours, formally began on Sunday by erecting a lingo (a wooden pole) at Basantapur.
The lingo decorated with colour paper was set up by chanting religious mantras.
The Fagu festival, also known as Holi, commences with the erection of the ritualistic wooden pole ‘Chir’ at Basantapur every year
The pole was erected at the auspicious hour of 8.26 am today. The time was fixed by the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee, according to Hanumandhoka Durbar Museum.
The erection of the Chir at Basantapur on the eighth day of the bright half of the month of Fagun signals the arrival of Fagu in the Kathmandu Valley.
The festival is celebrated with gaiety and fervour until the full moon day. People smear colours to each other while celebrating the Fagu. The main day festival falls on March 28 in the hilly districts and on March 29 in the Terai.
The lingo was also set up at Krishna Temple of Patan to mark the beginning of Fagu.
