Kathmandu, Dec. 29: Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Renu Kumari Yadav said that the authorities would be providing driving license and embossed number plates to the public shortly after completing the necessary process.
Speaking while briefing the media at the Department of Transport Management (DoTM) on Tuesday, Minister Yadav informed that the department had come up with plans to provide proper driving license and embossed number plates.
Minister Yadav had visited the DoTM to inspect the office alongside inaugurating the printing of smart driving license.
According to the DoTM officials, an individual seeking for driving license will be provided with a temporary license equipped with QR on the day s/he passes the driving trial.
“The temporary license will be the official license for a year. If an individual is found violating traffic rules more than five times in a year, s/he will not receive the smart driving license a year later,” said Namaraj Ghimire, DoTM director general.
An individual will receive the smart driving license after a year of receiving the temporary one.
“There are recently around 450,000 individuals awaiting smart driving license. We will be printing 8-10,000 license daily by running our printers three shifts a day,” said Ghimire.
Likewise, Ghimire also informed that they plan to construct Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) gates in six places inside Kathmandu and four places outside.
“The RFID gates will keep record of vehicles passing through it. It will identify the data through the respective vehicle’s embossed number plate,” said Ghimire.
Within the next year, DoTM officials informed, the RFID gate would be constructed in Thankot and nearby New Baneshwor.
The data collected through the gates will also be useful to check traffic volume; it is also expected to reduce theft of vehicles.
“Since embossed number plates have different benefits, it has been prioritised. Printing embossed number plates for provinces with names is underway in full speed,” said Minister Yadav.
According to Yadav, the ministry has a plan to manage necessary infrastructure to ensure printing of driving license and embossed number plates doesn’t halt.
