Kathmandu, June 10: Minister for Law Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Shivamaya Tumbahamphe Tuesday tabled the Constitution Amendment Bill (Second) in the House of Representatives for discussion.
Lawmakers and leaders of all parliamentary parties in the Federal Parliament supported the proposal of the government to amend the Constitution and include the updated map of the country in its Coat of Arms.
“The step to express clear stands for its national territory is appreciable, now the government should focus on getting back the territory from India,” they said.
India has been occupying Nepali land of Kalapani, Limpiyadhura and Lipulek for decades. The dispute resurfaced after India issued its political map including Nepali land of Limpiyadhura, Lipulek and Kalapani in November last year, which escalated further after India inaugurated a road in the Nepali land last month.
The government had strongly opposed the moves by sending diplomatic notes to India. The government also issued and unveiled an updated map of the country showing all Nepali territories in it.
Janata Samajwadi Party-Nepal, the third largest party in the House of Representatives, which had kept mum on the new map of Nepal, also backed the Bill in the parliament today.
The main opposition, the Nepali Congress, had already decided to support the government to amend the constitution.
Khagraj Adhikari, Krishna Bhakta Pokharel, Shanta Chaudhary, Tulasi Thapa and others of the ruling Nepal Communist Party appreciated the government for its clear stand on the border issue in the House. “Bold and historic decision has been taken,” they said.
Similarly, Gagan Thapa, Balkrishna Khand and Minendra Rijal of Nepali Congress also appreciated the government for the move and said the ruling party alone should not take the whole credit.
Rajendra Shrestha of Janata Samajbadi Party, Prem Suwal of Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party, Durga Paudel of Janamorcha also supported the government.
