Cancer causes 9% deaths in Nepal

Kathmandu, Feb. 4: Of the total deaths in a year, 9 per cent are due to cancer in Nepal. On average, cancer kills 45 people every day in Nepal, according to Nepal Cancer Relief Society (NCRS). Also, over 26,000 new patients of cancer are added in the country every year.
February 4 is commemorated as World Cancer Day, and it is also being observed in Nepal on Thursday by organising various programmes.
This year the government has come up with a slogan ‘I am and I will do it’.
Among various causes, consumption of tobacco-related products is taken as a major reason for growing cases of cancer.
Around 100 forms of cancer have so far been detected. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) data, even of the five main types of cancer that cause global deaths, there is difference between its type in males and females.
The major forms of male cancers include lungs, prostrate, large intestine, colorectal and liver. Likewise, in females, the major forms of cancers are breast, large intestine and colorectal, lungs, cervical and thyroid cancers.
At the same time, in developing countries, the major cancer that kills more women is cervical cancer.
There are various causes of cancers, for example, mouth and esophagus cancer is due to smoking, and consumption of tobacco products. If these people indulge in alcohol drinking, it will further add risks, said cancer specialist Dr. Rajendra Baral.
