Kathmandu, July 6: The Nepali Army (NA) Headquarters on Monday handed over 10,000 weapons and their accessories to the Nepal Police Headquarters.
Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS) General Purna Chandra Thapa handed over the weapons to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Shailesh Thapa Chhetri at a function held at the Army Headquarters this morning.
According to Brigadier General and spokesperson for the Army Headquarters Shantosh Ballave Paudyal, weapons, ammunition and the accessories were provided to Nepal Police. Among the weapons handed over are INSAS rifles and SLRs.
Chief of the Army Staff Thapa handed over 300 weapons, ammunition and related items to IGP Chhetri.
The army believes that the weapons would come in handy during training, special and very special person security and office security.
A Cabinet meeting held on May 31 had given approval to the army to provide the weapon for free.
According to the decision, the Nepali Army has provided 10,818 pieces of various types of rifles and machine guns and 1,494,016 pieces of ammunition, said the army spokesperson.
As per the plan, the weapons and ammunition will be provided in three phases, while the remaining will be handed over by the end of 2079 B.S.
He said that there was a plan to provide training to the Nepal Police on the maintenance and use of the weapons provided.
