By Manoj Bhattarai, Okhaldhunga, Aug. 10: Storm that struck the Molung Rural Municipality last Friday has left maize crops worth millions of rupees damaged.
The gale has inflicted damages on both ripened and newly grown maize as well as millet field. More than 700 farmers of Kuntadevi, in the municipality, have borne the maximum brunt of the storm. Devnarayan Dhamala, a farmer of Kuntadevi, said that all the maize that was ready for harvest got destroyed in the fast-blowing wind.
According to Dhamala, the storm-ravaged more than 1,200 kilograms of maize planted in his field, leaving the farmers worried that there won’t be maize seed for the next year’s plantation.
In addition, more than 500 pine trees of Dadankharka Kharichaur Community Forest and Dhunge Biswani Community Forest in Kuntadevi have also been destroyed in the Friday windstorm. Moreover, many trees that fell on the local power lines because of the gale have broken electricity poles and snapped wires and transmission lines.
