People aged above 60 yrs top COVID-19 death count, 50 young children aged 10-19 yrs have succumbed to deadly virus so far

By Asha Shah, Kathmandu, Aug. 9: The number of deaths due to COVID-19 has started increasing lately in the country with the rise in the number of people infected with the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

In terms of the age group, people aged above 60 years make up the largest number of death owing to COVID-19, according to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). Till Sunday, 5,413 people aged above 60 years have succumbed to the deadly virus infection in Nepal, according to the MoHP.

Dr. Samir Kumar Adhikari, an additional spokesperson of the MoHP, said that possibility of death due to COVID-19 grows in accordance with the age of the infected. "The older you are the greater possibility of losing your life due to COVID-19. And this applies in the case of the Children too."

As many as 10,093 people have died of COVID-19 in Nepal until Sunday, August 8, since the first death of the infection was recorded in the country on 16 May 2020.

45 children aged 0-9 years, 50 young children aged 10-19 years, 310 youths aged 20-29 years have lost their lives due to COVID-19 till the date since the pandemic hit Nepal.

Similarly, 833 people aged 30-39, 449 people of the age group 40-49 years old and 1,986 people in the age group of 50-59 years old have also succumbed to COVID-19.

It is believed that the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic started in Nepal on March 15 this year which reached its peak by the first week of May and it is still not over.
