COVID-19 infected woman gives birth to a child, both in normal health condition

By Madhusudhan Timilsina, Kavre, Sept. 2: A pregnant woman infected with the novel coronavirus has given birth to a girl child here at Dhulikhel hospital.

Aged 34, the woman is a resident of Panauti Municipality-4.

Prof. Dr. Suman Raj Tamrakar, Spokesperson of the Dulikhel Hospital, said, "The hospital helped in safe delivery of the baby adopting all health protocols although it involved some risk."

A team of staff nurse Mamata Rai and nursing instructor Sarina Shakya helped the infected pregnant woman deliver baby. She has given birth to a baby weighing two kilograms and nine hundred grams. Health condition of both the child and the mother is normal, informed the hospital.

As a temporary resident of Kathmandu, the woman was having regular pregnancy test at the Maternity Hospital at Thapathali.

She tested positive on the Polymerase Chain reaction (PCR) testing in the process and afterwards she was living in isolation in her permanent residence at Panauti-4.

Purushottam Timilsina, chief of the Panauti Municipal Health Branch, said that the municipality had managed ambulance for the pregnant woman and coordinated with Dhulikhel Hospital as soon as it was informed that the woman was having the labour pain.

The pregnant woman had a successful delivery at 2: 45 pm on Tuesday.

She will be undergoing treatment in Emergency Care Unit (ICU) for one more week and will be sent home only after testing negative for the virus.

Meanwhile, the new born will be tested for the virus as well.
