Kathmandu, Oct. 31:

Nepal Police detained 465 gamblers from across the country during Tihar festival while three people died in different road accidents.

Police detained them under the special security strategy put into place targeting the festive season.

The police raided 43 places of the country during the festival hours, according to the Police Headquarters. Among the total arrestees, three are women.

Different District Police Offices, units and the Area Police offices had run the operation. During the operation, police seized Rs. 33 million cash, according to DIG and spokesperson of Nepal Police Bishwa Raj Pokharel.  

The above details were collected from Kartik 2 to 13.

Majority of the people arrested in the case were registered cases according to Gambling Act, while a few were released on bail.

The largest police raid made during Tihar was at a gambling spot in Maharajgunj from where police had seized Rs. 26.7 million cash and detained 25 so-called high profile gamblers.

Some of the noted gamblers included Balaram Sapkota, also known as casino king, with his nick name Bale, contractor Pawan Kumar Gupta, industrialist Shrawan Kumar Goyal, Pabitra Kumar Karki of Air Dynasty, Bikram Gautam, Mukti Lama, Indra Bahadur Shrestha and Shambhu Bahadur Budhathoki.

The arrested had even filed a writ petition of mandamus. The arrestees are still at the police custody awaiting their hearings that adjourned till Thursday.
