Tanahun, Jan. 7: The Tanahun District Jail is making arrangements of a separate building for accommodating female inmates. Once the female prison opens, the compulsion to send female jailbirds to Pokhara and other cities will be a thing of the past.
Earlier, a separate building was built in the district jail for the same purpose, but because of overcrowding of the male jailbirds, the jail administration was forced to send female jailbirds elsewhere.
According to the prison, the old office building and security barracks are being repaired in full swing to accommodate female inmates, while the male ones will be accommodated at the new building.
Narayan Prasad Adhikari, information officer of the prison, said the reconstruction work of the women's prison had reached the final stage. The preparations are being made to operate the prison by mid-January. The prison has a capacity to accommodate 20 female inmates.
Following the construction of a new building, the old building is being turned into a place to accommodate female inmates, he added.
Angel Construction is awarded with the contract to build the women's prison. The Provincial government had allocated the required budget for the construction of the building.
Jailor Rishi Ram Subedi said, “Since there is no space for female inmates in the district jail, we are compelled to send them to other cities, like Pokhara and Besisahar, to complete their jail terms.”
"Because of a lack of a vehicle, on the one hand, the jail is facing difficulties in taking female inmates to the court from the prisons; on the other, their relatives and family members have also been facing hard times in meeting them,” he added.
The jail has a capacity to accommodate only 115 inmates. Currently, there are 258 prisoners in the jail, including 144 inmates and 114 detainees.
Every year, 15 female inmates are being sent out of the district as there was no separate building to accommodate female inmates in the district, added Subedi.
