Kathmandu, Dec. 9: A rhinoceros that was roaming around Tribenidham near the border with India is being brought back to the Chitwan National Park (CNP) by darting.
A team from CNP and National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) reached Binaya Triveni Rural Municipality-6 in Nawalparasi and brought the rhino to the CNP by darting and was released into the core area of CNP, said information officer at CNP Ganesh Prasad Tiwari.
The male rhino, seven-to-eight-years old, was released into the Kulbo Community Forest, in the eastern part of CNP on Monday, he informed. “The rhino was travelling to India and Nepal frequently and living in the Nawalparsai area for a long time,” he said. It was expected that the rhino reached India after being swept away by the flooded Narayani River some six years ago.
“We are able to bring it back after locals informed the park about the rhino grazing in the sugarcane fields of the Trivenidham area.
A team of technicians involved in the National Tiger Survey made the rhino unconscious and brought it to the eastern sector of CNP,” Tiwari said.
A team led by Dr. Bijay Kumar Shrestha, a wildlife doctor from CNP, and Dr. Amir Sadaula, a wildlife doctor from the NTNC, reached the Binaya Triveni Rural Municipality on Sunday to dart the rhino.
The rhino was darted with the help of wildlife doctors, technicians and helpers, who arrived with six elephants and locals, Tiwari said.
