Over 18,000 personnel to be deployed for SAG security

Kathmandu, Nov. 27: The government has decided to deploy over 18,000 security personnel to make the mega sporting event, 13th South Asian Games (SAG), a successful. The 13th SAG game will take place in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Janakpur from December 1 to 10.
Four security bodies-Nepal Police, the Armed Police Force, Nepali Army and the National Investigation Department will deploy their personnel to safeguard the games from any untoward happening.
Deputy Inspector General and spokesperson of Nepal Police Bishwa Raj Pokharel said that necessary security coordination were already set up to make the event organised, and peaceful from all perspectives.
“Nepal Police will alone deploy 10,000 security personnel in the field to control possible untoward during the event,” DIG Pokharel said while talking to The Rising Nepal on Tuesday.
SAG Security Coordination Committee led by Inspector General of Nepal Police Sarbendra Khanal was formed a week ago. The committee was formed based under SAG Organising and Management related Work Procedure-2019, DIG Pokharel said.
Brigadier General of Nepali Army Himanshu Khadka, DIG of Nepal Police Deep Kumar Thapa, DIG of APF Chandra Prasad Gautam, NID director Laxman Gurung, Saraswoti K.C. and Khagendra Poudel of National Sports Council as members of the Committee.
Nepal Police has managed to bring security forces from outside the districts, DIG Pokharel said. APF will deploy 5,000 forces to make the event a successful. Similarly, over 3,000 Nepali Army forces will be deployed at the outer layer of the security ring managed by the Committee.
“As the government is going to host this mega sporting event on the eve of Visit Nepal Year-2020, we have given utmost priority to security arrangement to make this event a flawless,” DIG Pokharel said.
This time, the SAG games are going to be held in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Kaski and Dhanusha districts. Altogether 26 events will be in place in 30 sports grounds. Of the total games, 12 will be held in Kathamndu, nine in Lalitpur, eight in Pokhara and one wrestling event will happen in Janakpur of Dhanusha district.
Security bodies will be deployed as per its necessity and level of security threats, Police Headquarters said. According to the Police Headquarters, around 2,209 representatives including players, officials and coaches will be here in Nepal.
Around 2,000 volunteers will also be there in the field. Prior to this, 3rd edition of SAG was hosted by Nepal. This is the 9th edition of SAG games which is going to happen from December 1 in Kathmandu.
Meanwhile, Metropolitan Traffic Police Division will deploy around 7,000 traffic police personnel to manage the traffic system throughout the events, SP Rabi Poudel and spokesperson at Traffic Division said.
