By TRN Online, Kathmandu, Apr. 28: The International Trade Union Confederation has made a projection that around 13 million people will lose their jobs in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It has been said that 700,000 to 800,000 Nepalis in and outside the nation would lose direct employment in the same time span.
A request has been made from the trade union of the concerned nations to ensure employment security to the increasing number of unemployed Nepalis across the world in the wake of the pandemic.
In 2020, ITUC had predicted that one million people in Nepal would be unemployed due to the spread of the virus in year 2020. A total of 250 million people across the globe had lost their jobs in 2020.
Issuing a notice, ITUC has requested the world, especially governments welcoming migrant workers, to prioritise creating more employment programmes in the post-pandemic world.
Similarly, the confederation has demanded the governments to ensure quality employment by investing in education and training and give legitimacy to employments in unofficial sectors.
Chairman of Nepal Trade Union Congress Puskar Acharya said that as the Congress was affiliated to ITUC for the past 25 years, discussions as to ensuring job security were being held with the confederation.
"We are also holding dialogues with various stakeholders with a motive to draw the government's attention in providing secured employment opportunities to the labours," he added.
