Tea Makes Brain Healthier

Tea helps brain to be healthier,’ concluded specialists from the National University (Singapore). Scientists have shown the beneficial effect of tea using the method of neuroimaging, that is, they displayed certain brain characteristics depending on the use of tea. How useful is the drink - and how many years do you need to drink it?
The researchers assembled a group of volunteers, who were then divided according to two indicators: those who drink a lot of tea and those who drink little tea. It is important to understand that the amount and timing of drinking tea is important. So, in the first group there were only those who drank green, black or "milk" (oolong) tea at least four times a week for about 25 years. The whole group, thus, was formed from people who were 60 or more years old.
To begin with, scientists evaluated their health indicators, as well as the dynamics of the brain, this was helped by magnetic resonance imaging. Then a series of tests were carried out, which showed how well the brain works in the subjects. And it turned out that all tea lovers showed a higher level of efficiency in solving problems in particular and the brain as a whole. In particular, their hemispheric asymmetry was reduced. Violation of the interaction between the hemispheres with problems with it is known as “split brain syndrome” and can cause impaired speech, motor skills and coordination of movements.
The authors of the study note that the direct effect of regular tea parties on reducing hemisphere asymmetry is direct evidence that tea is good. “If we draw an analogy, we can imagine areas of the brain as different destinations, and the connections between these areas are roads. Naturally, the better organised the road system, the more efficient the transportation. At a minimum, this helps to use fewer resources and more efficiently move passenger flows. So it is with the brain - there are stable connections between the areas, you can efficiently process the incoming information,” comments Lei Feng, team leader.
The current findings of scientists regarding tea help more accurately “choose the focus” of the following studies: for example, it is planned to find out exactly how the various substances that tea is rich in help the brain at different ages. The research also touches on issues of memory, intelligence and cognitive abilities, and earlier work of other research groups showed that tea also affects the cardiovascular system, being useful in some diseases. For example, hot tea becomes a good helper in glaucoma.
