Kathmandu, Apr. 4: The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has revised the fare structure of the public transport operating in more than one province.
According to a notice issued by the DoTM on Sunday, the new fare would come into effect right from today.

The new fare was approved by the Federal Ministry for Physical Infrastructure and Transport on March 31. The fare of passenger buses and vehicles has been increased by 10 per cent while the fare of heavy vehicles transporting goods has been increased as per the geography.

The fare of heavy vehicles plying in the hilly region has been increased by 13 per cent while a 15 per cent rise in the fare has been set for those operating along the Terai roads.
The increment came following a sharp rise in the price of petroleum products in the past few months.

"The fare was earlier increased on May 11, 2021, when the price of diesel was Rs. 104 per litre. Now the diesel price has increased by 32.69 per cent and reached Rs. 138 per litre due to which the fare has been revised," the notice read.
According to the DoTM, there are 13 indicators in total and based on five of them the fare has been revised.

"Among the 13 indicators, petroleum is the indicator which often gets changed – either increase or decrease," said Namraj Ghimire, director general of DoTM, during a press meet a week ago. Ghimire had also informed that the department planned to implement a self-adjusting fare system based on the petroleum prices while the fare would be revised based on other indicators on an annual basis.

"If the petroleum price increases or decreases by five per cent, the fare will be adjusted on the basis of scientific method utilised by the department," the notice read.
