Kathmandu, Nov. 29: Nepal has banned the on arrival visa to African nationals following the detection of the new variant, “Omicron Virus,” in Africa, which is spreading rapidly.

Fanindra Mani Pokharel, Spokesperson to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA), said that the on-arrival visa to the African nationals has been banned until further decision on the issue.

The decision was made because the new variant is said to be highly mutating as well as more contagious. So, to avoid the spread of the virus to Nepal, the decision was taken, he said while adding that no decision has been made on the travel restrictions yet.

Experts around the globe have pointed out that the Omicron Variant might be more transmissible after citing the exponential surge in COVID-19 cases lately.

In view of the surge in COVID-19 cases elsewhere globally and detection of a new variant of concern Omicron, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Sunday appealed to countries in South-East Asia Region to scale up surveillance, strengthen public health and social measures, and enhance vaccination coverage.
