Kathmandu, Sept. 8: The government has decided to not celebrate the National Education Day on September 8 from this year stating that the date was not relevant with the national history of education. The National Education Day and International Literacy Day were being celebrated on September 8 in previous years. However, the government has decided to celebrate only International Literacy Day on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) has been planning to celebrate the National Education Day on some other day rather than celebrating it jointly with the International Literacy Day, Deepak Sharma, spokesperson of the MOEST, said in a statement.
According to Sharma, the government is planning to celebrate National Education Day on a special day of national history of education. The Ministry has proposed different dates at the cabinet to celebrate the Education Day, and they under discussion, Puran Khadka, personal secretary of Minister for Education, Science and Technology Giriraj Mani Pokharel, said. According to Khadka, dates like establishment day of Darbar High School are in discussion to celebrate the National Education Day.
Meanwhile, this year International Literacy Day is being celebrated by planting trees and releasing souvenir regarding literacy at the premises of Centre for Education and Human Resource Development (CEHRD) on Tuesday.
The theme of International Literacy Day 2020 is “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond,” especially on the role of educators and changing pedagogies.
According to the United Nations (UN), the theme highlights literacy learning in a lifelong learning perspective, and therefore, mainly focuses on youth and adults.
