Kathmandu, July 13: Floods and landslides have claimed 77 lives within a month after the monsoon entered Nepal on June 12.According to National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), mainly two types of natural disasters -- landslides and floods --have claimed the lives of 77 people with 42 missing cases as of July 12.
The death toll, counted by including all types of natural disasters like fire, snakebite, thunderbolts, and other natural calamities from June 12, the number stood at 130 in a month, Joint Secretary Murari Wosti at the NDRRMA told The Rising Nepal.
According to NDRRMA, 52 people have sustained injury due to the floods and landslides within the period. As per the latest casualty report of the Authority, the highest human loss took place in Myagdi's landslide with 27 deaths.
Similarly, 10 died in landslides of Jajarkot, seven in Kaski, and three in Sindhupalchowk, last week. According to the Authority, 27 people died in the landslides that occurred at Dhaulagiri, Malika and Raghuganga Gaunpalikas of Myagdi district due to heavy rains that took place after July 9. Four are still missing in Myagdi landslides, Joint Secretary Wosti said.
Likewise, 10 persons were killed in landslides in Borekot Gaunpalika-4 and other villages of Jajarkot district after July 9. In these disasters, five people went missing.
In Kaski, so far seven people have been killed in landslides at Sarangkot and other villages with 13 missing cases. Five people were killed in landslides in Sarangkot, and one each in Hemja and Paitedanda of Kaski, according to the record.
Also, in the landslides and floods in Sindhupalchowk, 20 persons are still missing with three deaths. Similarly, 10 people are missing in Sankhuwasabha and four each in Myagdi and Jajarkot district.
In the last one month (June 12-July 12), thunderbolts took lives of 17 people and injured 42.
Joint Secretary Wosti said that landslides

alone had rendered 266 families homeless and floods another 79 families during the period.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, there is still a high probability of continuous and heavy rainfall till Monday night in many parts of the country.
From June 12 to July 9, before the Meteorology Office forecast heavy rains for four days, the number of human casualty mainly from floods and landslides, and thunderbolts was just 24. And from July 9 to July 12, the death toll reached 53, according to Wosti.
According to him, this monsoon’s first ever landslide occurred at Durlung of Dhakalbari in Parbat district in early morning of June 14, claiming eight lives with two missing cases.
Meanwhile, death toll in the massive landslips of Myagdi reached 27 with four missing cases and 12 injuries as of July 12 update of the government Sunday evening.
According to the National Emergency Operation Centre of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Centre has officially recorded 10 more deaths from different parts of the country. Of them, seven bodies were recovered from the rubble of Myagdi landslides, while two were recovered from Jajarkot landslides, and one from Sindhupalchowk.
In Sindhupalchowk, 20 people were reported as still missing with three confirmed death cases, according to the NEOCO update of Sunday evening at 7:00 pm.
Also, in Jajarkot landslides, 206 families have rendered homeless while three are still missing.
Similarly, a person went missing after a flood in Sarlahi swept him away this afternoon.
According to Our Reporters in Sankhuwasabha and Biratmanagr, in a massive landslide that occurred at Silingchowk Gaunpalika in Sankhuwasabha district on Saturday night, 11 persons went missing.
The landslide swept away nine houses in total.
Houses of Gowa Singh Rai, Ramman Rai, Juddha Bahadur Rai (Gairi), Juddha Bahadur Rai (Mane), Najmaya Rai, Harka Raj Rai, Bhim Bahadur Rai, Sandip Rai and Subhadhan Rai were swept away by the landslip, according to chief of the District Police Office, Sankhuwasabha DSP Nawaraj Malla.
Eleven members of the five houses went missing, he added. Those who went missing included Ramman Rai,60, and his wife Hasta Kumari Rai, 55,their pregnant daughter Enjila Rai, 21, and another daughter Namrata Rai, 11.
Likewise, wife of Juddha Bahadur Rai (Gairi) Gori Maya Rai,65, his daughter Prakriti Rai, 22, Juddha Bahadur Rai (Mane), 52, his wife Uttar Kumari, 45, Najmaya Rai, 70, Harkaraj Rai, 84, and his wife Aita Maya Rai,82, went missing in the landslide.
Gewa Singh Rai, whose house was completely swept away, was injured seriously. He is receiving treatment at local health facility. A local, Madan Rai who had informed the police about the incident died later.
He fell conscious while he was informing the police and media about the disaster and breathed his last while being taken to local health post, said Chief District Officer Jiwan Acharya.
A rescue team comprising 25 from Nepali Army, 15 from Nepal Police and 13 from Armed Police Force was sent to the incident site, but the team could reach the site only on Monday as the road to Silingchowk was blocked due to heavy rains.
