Charikot, Oct. 22: Minister for Communication and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Baskota said on Tuesday that the trend of disseminating fake and baseless news had gone up in Nepal.
Speaking at the 12th annual general meeting of Sailung Sanchar Cooperatives Limited and the anniversary of the Sailung Radio 92.7 MH here, Minister Baskota expressed his worry that the Nepali media were running after individuals, missions and headlines.
Stating that laws to regulate the media were in the offing, Minister Baskota said that in a democracy laws fixed everything.
“Now radios should be defined whether they are for the community or businessmen, there is no need to panic, the media have made a lot of progress, we are expanding 4 G service across the country,” he said.
He said that development of water resources, tourism and other sectors was a must for prosperity and the media should cooperate with the government for that.
Minister Baskota said that one had to wait only for three years for prosperity in Nepal. “The government is determined for this,” he said, adding that unity was essential for a complete civic freedom.
Urging one and all not to spread rumours, Minister Baskota said criticism is a good aspect of democracy, but criticism should always be for positive changes.
He said that the Nepali Congress that led the government for 20 years should not seek everything in 20 months.
He said that the government was trying its best to maintain good governance in the country.
“We will not allow criminalisation in politics, wrong doers face action, there are signs of such acts now,” he said
Highlighting the major development activities carried out by the present government, Minister Baskota said that the government was committed to fulfil the promises made with the people during the general elections.
In the programme chaired by Shiva Bhandari of Sailung Sanchar Cooperatives Limited, former minister Ananda Pokharel, lawmaker Parbat Gurung and others had also expressed their views.
