Group of 77 should further strengthen multilateralism: Minister Gyawali

New York, Sept 27: Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali has stressed the need of Group of 77 (G77) to further consolidate multilateralism and defend its common interest across the UN development agendas.    
Minister Gyawali said so while addressing the ministerial meeting of the Group of 77on the sidelines of the 74th sessions of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) being held here.    
Group of 77 at the United Nations (UN) is a coalition of 134 developing nations which is designed to advance the economic agenda of its members as well as to create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the UN.    
"Nepal recently adopted the Fifteenth Five-Year Plan centered on realization of the national aspiration of “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali", Minister Gyawali said, adding that major milestones for Nepal would be graduating from the LDC status at the earliest and become a middle-income country by 2030 and achieving the SDGs before the deadline.    
Stating that Nepal was putting every effort possible for job creations, reducing inequality, strengthening connectivity and lifting more people out of poverty, all our efforts were in place to create jobs, Gyawali called for international support for this national initiatives.    
Underscoring the need for the Group of 77 to improve its performance and defend its common interest across the UN development agenda, he said that Nepal was committed to further strengthen the unity, solidarity and cohesion among its member-nations.    
Pressing for a strong coordination among the different G77 chapters, he highlighted three priorities for the Group such as strengthening multilateralism as well as maintain a rule-based, open transparent and predictable international trading system and meaningful trade liberalization.     
Furthermore, the Minister batted for making globalization more inclusive. He argued that all the countries should be linked to the global value chain to accrue equitable benefit from the system.    
Informing the acute shortage of resources in Nepal required to achieve SDGs, Minister Gyawali underlined the need for strong collaboration between the G77 countries and its development partners for economic collaboration to achieve SDGs.    
According to him, any least developed country like Nepal is needed estimated USD 18 billion to attain SGDs.    
He also pointed out the need for G77 nations to persuade all partners on the need of adequate resources for development including trade, technology and capacity building and the like.    
Minister Gyawali is leading the Nepali delegation to the 74th UNGA. He is scheduled to make an address in the general debate tomorrow evening.
