Lukla, Solukhumbu, Oct. 21: Nepal has set a new world record in golf by playing the game at Kongde, located at an altitude of 4,250 metres above sea level, near Mt. Everest base camp.
This is the first time in the world that golf was played at the highest altitude ever, on Sunday, claimed Pratik Pradhan, Editor-in-Chief of Baahrakhari media, an online news portal that organised the Baahrakhari Aamantran Golf.
According to him, four professional golfers reached Kongde early this morning to set a new record in history of golf, teeing off the golf in a 100 yards green placed overnight to welcome more than three dozen professional golfers from home and abroad.
He said that the event was played in two places around the base camp area, in Kongde (4,250 m) and Shangboche (3,889 m) of the Everest region.
Four professional golfers teed off from Kongde while other eight had teed off from Shangboche. Four golfers to tee off from Kongde were Bikash Rana, Aarti Rana, Rekha Ghimire and Rabindra Shrestha.
Talking to The Rising Nepal, Bikash Rana, who had first teed off at Kongde, said that it was awesome to have golf at the highest altitude ever. "It was really a good experience for me to tee off at the highest altitude, which is not of Nepal but the world. I enjoyed a lot and I am very happy," he said.
He said that the golf at the highest altitude would help promote both golf and Nepal in the world.
"Mt. Everest is famous in the world. The golf at Everest Base camp will help promote Nepal in the world in the eve of the Visit Nepal 2020," he added.
Similarly, Rekha Ghimire became the first woman to tee off at this altitude. She remarked this as an opportunity to highlight Nepal in the international fora.
Aarti Rana had also set a record by scoring a par. "It was usual to golf at normal golf course in my everyday life. However, this is totally different. We have set a new world record in history of golf by playing at an altitude of 4,250m," she said.
The organiser has categorised the match into two phases. The first one hole was held at Kongde while the later 17 hole game will take place at Gokarna Safari Resort in Gokarna, Kathmandu. An approximately 100 golfers are expected to participate in the second phase game.
