Bir Hospital adds 29 CCU beds

Kathmandu, Feb. 24: Bir Hospital has added 18 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 11 (High Dependency Unit) HDU beds altogether 29 beds in Critical Care Units in the new surgical building.

Dr Bhupendra Basnet, Chief at Bir Hospital said that although the new building has the technology to operate up to 50 ICUs for non-COVID patients, only 18 ICUs will come into operation at present.

"Of the 29 ICU and HDU added to the surgical building, there are 20 post-up beds,” said Dr Basnet, "35 beds ICU in the old building were already in operation."

According to Dr Basnet, there is still a shortage of ICU in hospitals for critically ill patients. 29 beds including ICU and HDU have been added to expand the service due to high patient inflow.

He said that four nurses are needed in a day to keep one nurse per bed, but, that manpower is lacking at the hospital. He stressed that there is a need to add nursing manpower in the hospital via competitive exams, public service commission.
