Uphold Non-aligned Foreign Policy

Ever since Nepal joined the United Nations in 1955, it has strictly adhered to non-aligned foreign policy. In a world that has witnessed several wars, a cold war between the superpowers, the US and the USSR, and is polarised between the Western and non-Western blocs, the Himalayan nation's neutral stance and adherence to the Panchsheel have proved a milestone for Nepal in enhancing its international image and its own well-being. Nepal has been a prominent champion of world peace and the backer of Panchsheel, or the five principles of peaceful co-existence that emphasises mutual respect's territorial integrity and sovereignty, mutual non-aggression, mutual non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and co-operation for mutual benefits, and peaceful co-existence. As it adheres to these principles, Nepal is always quick to denounce any wars or acts of aggression whenever or wherever they take place.

A nation sandwiched between two economic superpowers, China and India, Nepal has achieved remarkable support from them owing to its neutrality and its sticking to the ideals of Panchsheel. The neutral foreign stance has made the country successful in maintaining its friendly and peaceful relationship with the two immediate neighbours. Nepal has firmly stood against any elements that try to abuse her soil to carry out activities against its immediate neighbours and other friendly nations. Because of its friendly relations based on the values of mutual respect, equality, sovereignty and independence with other nations, our country has gained the confidence and faith of several nations, no matter what blocs they belong to. Owing to its friendly and respectful gestures, the country has been able to receive billions in economic and other assistance from close neighbours and other rich and developed nations.

Apart from adhering to its non-aligned foreign policy, Nepal has been active in promoting and maintaining peace throughout our region and the world. An active UN member, this nation has supported the idea of peace as a strict follower of the objectives and principles of the UN Charter. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said Nepal, as an active supporter of world peace, has contributed to maintaining peace in the world for the last six decades. He even promised that the contribution that Nepal has made towards maintaining peace in the world will not decline in the future while his government is engaged in enhancing the image and prestige of Nepalis and Nepal in the international arena.

Although adherence to non-aligned policy has brought about many good results, experts say it must make judicious changes in its foreign policy to address the demands of the concurrent geopolitical situation. It is high time that the drafters of our foreign policy took a close look at the new emerging global situation as well as the alteration in the global hierarchy of China and India. Even if we stick to a neutral foreign policy that does not allow Nepal to side with any power, our foreign policy must address the challenges and vagaries of the shifting geopolitics. If our experts prepare a foreign policy giving utmost importance to our needs and emerging situation then our country can take maximum benefits rather than falling victim to new changes in geopolitics.
