Army For Development

Apart from its primary responsibility of defending the nation’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence, the Nepali Army (NA) has been playing a crucial role in national development. With the utilisation of its well-trained and dedicated human resources, the NA has been contributing to the nation’s development by carrying out numerous infrastructure projects, especially roads. It has been able to develop road networks in many far-flung areas through the implementation of road and bridge projects. It is worth recalling here that the NA was the key partner to build the 105-km Kantipath road that connects Kathmandu with the Indian border. Other major roads constructed with the involvement of NA include the 105-km Trishuli-Somdang, 232-km Surkhet-Jumla, 88-km Katari-Okhaldhunga, 86-km Salyan-Musikot, 91-km Baglung-Beni-Jomsong road, 45-km Drabya Shah Marga, 65-km Besi Sahar-Chame, 45-km Gorkha-Aarughat, 107-km Chhinchu-Jajarkot, 112-km Jajarkot-Dolpa, 31-km Devsthal-Chourjahari, 145-km Musikot-Burtibang and 91-km Nagma-Gamgadhi.

With the NA’s capacity to make even impossible things possible, the security body seems to have been able to take the government into confidence with its performance. Because of its credentials, the NA has also been entrusted with the responsibility of constructing the 81.8-km Nijgadh-Kathmandu Fast Track. Once this national pride project is completed, it will be an important highway linking Kathmandu with the Terai region. This expressway is going to have a lot of positive implications for the socio-economic development of the nation. But, the fast track project has failed to gain due momentum because of different issues such as obstructions created by the locals in Khokana and other areas. However, this infrastructure will have much significance as soon as the government's plan to build the Second International Airport in Nijgadh materialises.

NA has also been assigned to contribute to the conservation of nature. Its personnel have been deployed at national parks, wildlife reserves and conservation areas across the country for their protection. Nepal's conservation efforts would not have been so much successful without the NA's dedication. It has been able to contain poaching and other illegal activities with its proactive role in anti-poaching activities. In addition, the army has been instrumental in the management of various forms of disaster. NA has been working as an integral part of the government to conduct disaster relief operations. It plays a vital part in providing emergency assistance to the needy people throughout the nation in the time of natural calamities such as flash floods, landslides, inundation, snow storms and earthquakes. It carries out search, rescue and evacuation missions. It even conducts air rescue operations and provides medical assistance, food, water and shelter to those in need. Army teams also take part to clean up Sagarmatha and other mountains.

Meanwhile, Prime Minster and Defence Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has commended the NA for its contributions to the construction of different national roads, including the Kathmandu-Terai Fast Track and other national road corridors having strategic importance in country's economic development. The PM expressed the view while inaugurating a two-day Command Army Chief Coordination Meeting at the NA Headquarters on Wednesday on the eve of Mahashivaratri and the Army Day. He added that the NA would not have to face any resource constraints while implementing the national pride projects like the Kathmandu-Terai Fast Track.
